Verana Health, in collaboration with the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s IRIS® Registry (Intelligent Research in Sight), is transforming ophthalmic care and research through advanced real-world data (RWD) and real-world evidence (RWE) solutions.
This year, Verana Health released the 2024 Industry Report on its partnership with the IRIS Registry—the largest specialty society clinical data registry in all of medicine and the first comprehensive eye disease clinical registry in the United States.
Drawing on electronic health record (EHR) data from nearly 3,000 ophthalmology practices across the U.S., Verana Health continues to support clinicians and empower life sciences companies with research-ready datasets (Qdata®) and innovative tools designed to elevate both clinical and operational outcomes.
The Industry Report details patient demographics, total visits by year, ophthalmologist subspecialties, as well as a breakdown of total patients by diagnosis, and the top eye and ocular adnexa CPT codes of 2024.

In addition to ingesting EHR data, Verana Health supports ophthalmology practices with Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) reporting to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). This enables clinicians who participate in the IRIS Registry to meet quality benchmarks and obtain payment adjustments from CMS. Direct ingestion provides a greater level of confidence in data accuracy, as well as traceability for technical problem-solving.
The Industry Report provides a high-level overview of patient and clinician-level data contained within the IRIS Registry. Highlights of the report include:
- A preview of Practice Insights—Verana Health’s new tool designed to help ophthalmology practices assess billing patterns and benchmark operational performance
- A deep dive into Verana Health’s Qdata Thyroid Eye Disease-–a research-ready dataset that unlocks real-world learnings, such as severity and clinical activity, on 338K+ de-identified patients with this rare disease
- Summaries of observational research projects published in 2024 that utilize IRIS Registry data to reveal insights into conditions such as age-related macular degeneration, diabetic macular edema, geographic atrophy, and more
- A look ahead at an innovative generative AI interface for Qdata that will allow users to query real-world datasets using natural language to uncover insights into patient journeys, treatment histories, and clinical outcomes.
