Q: How would you explain your role? 

A: Using artificial intelligence (AI), such as machine learning (ML) models, I develop imaging derived insights. I combine electronic health records and clinical ophthalmic images to develop automated methods of detecting and assessing the progression of disease over time. Most recently, as part of a team, we developed algorithms to detect and measure the severity of geographic atrophy in IR, FAF and OCT.

Q: What attracted you to the Quantitative Sciences field?  

A: The opportunity to extract insights and solve problems within unstructured real-world data is what attracted me to the Quantitative Sciences field.

Q: What attracted you to Verana Health? 

A: What attracted me to Verana Health was the friendly, curious, and collaborative people within the company.

Q: What inspires you to do this work? 

A: Making an impact on a patient’s health and outcomes is very inspiring to me.

Q: What is the most rewarding part of your job? 

A: The most rewarding part of my job is getting things to work! I enjoy developing data-driven models and algorithms to identify and create solutions, when faced with complex data. 

Q: What advancements do you see in your field in the next 5 years? 

A: The advancements I see in the quantitative sciences field in the next 5 years is widespread incorporation of AI/ML workflows directly into the medical/research and development fields to help speed up the identification (and ultimately treatment) of diseases.

When she’s not developing insights, Kim enjoys traveling and spending time outdoors.
